Trekking is a big time sport in Huaraz. There are trekking companies
all over town, especially on Av. Luzuriaga, the main drag going north
from Plaza de Armas. The two big treks are the Santa Cruz which takes
four days, and the Huayhuash which can take twelve days. Both involve
passes at 4,750 meters, so you need to be acclimated. To check out your
acclimation, take a one day trek to Lake Churup (4,500 meters) starting
at the village of Llupa, a combi ride east of Huaraz.
Organized overnight treks involve paying a guide, a donkey man and
donkeys. The trekking company provides tents, breakfast and supper, and
transportation. A few intrepid souls try to do these treks without a
guide, carrying their own gear. Usually they do not succeed, and some do
not make it back out.
