How
many of you do chat on the Internet? It can be a terrible waste of time, or it
can be a valuable cross-cultural experience.
Or it can be both. I have had
wonderful insights to life in Peru, Iran, and China through contacts I have
sought out on line.
In September of 2006 I sought out a contact in Uganda.
My original intent was to find an independent source of information on
Uganda's HIV/AIDS prevention program,
since the administration in Washington was
holding it up as an example of right thinking.
Before I get done I will tell you
my conclusions on that subject.
Meanwhile, my contact clued me in to the need for improved water sources for
the villages in Uganda,.Indeed it does not take much searching to discover
that this is a high priority among international aid agencies.
Together we worked toward
drilling a borehole in the village of her birth, and eventually fixed on
repairing an existing borehole that had fallen into disrepair since the
colonials left in 1962.
That project was completed in July of 2007.
In September
2007 I booked a flight to see first-hand the results of the work, and to explore
other possibilities. |
