Electricity in Uganda

Discharge below the Owens Falls Dam

These rapids on the Nile will be submerged by the Bujagali project.

As hydro projects move downstream, even Murchison Falls may disappear.

Uganda is desperately short of electricity. The main hydroelectric plant is at Owens Falls, the discharge of Lake Victoria at Jinja, source of the Nile. Power is distributed from here to the district capitals, but there are no transformers along the way. Brownouts and power cuts are common. Sometime in 2008 the Bujagali hydro project should come on stream, just downriver from Owens Falls. Several other projects are possible between this location and Murchison Falls.

Lack of electricity holds back industrial and agricultural development in the country. Lack of household electricity shortens the working day.
