Building a wattle and daub home. Half of all rural homes are built like this, with a thatch roof.
Almost 90% of rural homes are owner-occupied.

Kampala has fine buildings housing banks and businesses. The Muammur Gaddafi Mosque and stadium are top quality. There are sections of fine homes, and sections where nice bungalows are mixed in with shanties.

In rural areas the wattle and daub home with a thatch roof is still common. An upgrade might involve a corrugated metal roof, though that would make the interior hotter.

Bricks are produced in rural areas by stacking wet mud bricks four wide in a long row several feet high with a grass roof to keep off the rain. Once they are thoroughly dry, a wood fire is lit against the sides of the row, and a soft fired brick results. These bricks are laid up with copious mortar to make a permanent structure. A refinement is to use the Mediterranean technique of framing the house out with concrete pillars and beams, using the brick as in-fill. Brick houses normally have metal roofs.
